Watch the Carbs!

Oh, my god!

I wondered why I had been feeling so awful - downright miserable even - and, my test results came back from my OB/GYN - I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.  Unbelievable!

Today, I had my first diabetic counseling appointment with a nutritionist from Fisher-Titus.  She was very friendly and helpful, and must have sensed the sheer terror in me, because she went out of her way to explain everything in great detail, and told me not to worry - this is a common occurance.  It's not common to me, however.  This is not my first rodeo; I have, in fact, birthed babies before and NEVER been diagnosed with this.

It's scary!

My obstetrician seems fond of pushing meds - insulin shots is what she threatened - if I am not able to get this under control with a proper diet! Does she not know that I hate shots? I do not even take Tylenol unless the migraine is so bad I can't see straight.  I HATE PILLS!

I now have to monitor every single morsel of food I put into my mouth, keep track of the carb count in a notebook, and check my blood sugar levels four times a day by sticking myself WITH A NEEDLE!

Of course, the girls freaked the hell out when they witnessed me doing this for the first time after dinner.  I had to put on a brave face and act like it was just another day at the zoo - no big deal! They got right up in my business just as I was getting ready to push the button, which makes an awfully loud popping noise, and Carley jerked back and covered her cheeks when she heard it - as if someone were shooting HER up! Kara, on the other hand, cocked her head and pierced her lips, saying, "that's nasty!" before turning and walking away.

This...this is fun for the whole family I tell ya!
